How To Create Bootable Usb For Gpt Partition Windows 10

  1. Home
  2. Windows
  3. Windows 10

Hi Experts,

I'm having challenges in booting Windows 10 and any other bootable tools from a USB if the partitioning scheme is GPT. USB is not booting, instead, I see dots on the screen.

I used RUFUS to partition the USB key to GPT and tried both NTFS & FAT32, no go

I made sure the laptop is set to UEFI Hybrid (with CSM). Tried with UEFI Native, not working

Tried enabling UEFI SecureBoot to force the USB loading to GPT, no go

I verified under Disk Management -> Properties -> Volume. USB key's partition style is GPT

Tried updating the laptop BIOS/UEFI to the latest version - (HP Notebook System BIOS Update, 01.31 Rev.A, May 8, 2020. ) Still same issue

Tried couple of different USB keys, no go

If I burn the .ISO to a USB key with MBR, Windows 10 OS is loading fine in this laptop. But the problem is I'm unable to install OS to a GPT formatted SSD. Throws an error "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

Laptop make & model: HP Elitebook 840 G2.

Note: When I tried the same GPT formatted usb key to another laptop (HP Elitebook 1030 G1), it is booting fine without any issues.

Attached screenshot for reference.

Any ideas and guidance will be appreciated

If you're trying to install Windows 10 fresh and are able to wipe the internal drive, try getting to the command prompt from the Windows USB.  Run diskpart, select the internal drive, and run "clean".  This will completely wipe the drive, and also removes the partition table.  You can then try installing Windows to the disk again.

You might need to manually initialize the disk as either MBR or GPT before you can select it as the installation destination.  I don't remember what the diskpart commands for that are, but you might be able to run "exit" to close diskpart and then run "diskmgmt.msc" to open the Disk Management GUI and do it that way.

Hello,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, Windows 10 USB partitioned with gpt is not booting at all.

For the business requirements, I need to install OS in a vhdx partition.

If I Windows 10 iso is burnt to USB in mbr format, usb is booting.

Then I followed the same way. In DiskPart issued 'Clean' to wipe. Then 'Convert GPT'. Then create EFI, msr and primary partition.

Assigned a letter to primary partition.

After that created a .Vhdx file within the primary partition.

Attached the .vhdx.

Now diskpart sees two disks, select disk 1 (.vhdx), clean, convert gpt. Create primary partition within the .vhdx disk and assign a letter

Now Windows 10 installer GUI will see the partition from .vhdx.

When I try to install OS, I'm getting " Windows Cannot be Installed to This Disk. The Selected Disk is of the GPT Partition Style"

You could use Windows Media Creation tool. This Linux method describes what partitions, etc, you need on the USB stick https://techbit.ca/2019/02/creating-a-bootable-windows-10-uefi-usb-drive-using-linux/

My bad, I forgot the Windows 10 GPT USB wouldn't boot at all.

Just to clarify, you tried booting to the GPT USB both with Secure Boot enabled and with it disabled?

I know it's probably not ideal, but are you able to convert the disk(s) back to MBR and install Windows on an MBR partition?  Or you need to have it installed on GPT?

Hi, I tried booting GPT USB key with SecureBoot, enabled and disabled. Not booting.

But the same USB key is booting in a different latest HP laptop,

Mbr partitioned USB key booting successfully.

However, I need to install OS in GPT partitioned disk. I cannot use dism command to apply install.wim

Requirement provided is to install through Windows OS installer GUI. I'm using HP Cloud Recovery USB key which is having Windows 10.

We're using that way as HP advised that Windows would be activated automatically without internet (offline using OEM product key burnt in bios).

Calling Microsoft phone support is also not an option. They require Windows activated offline automatically.

Any advices please.

Thanks a lot.

However, the issue is GPT partitioned USB is not booting.

McMurray Computer Experts is an IT service provider.

If you use the Windows Media Creation tool to create a bootable USB it will enable you to install to either MBR or GPT depending on what the BIOS is set for. The USB it creates will be MBR.

It will activate normally because the OEM product key is in the BIOS not in the HP installer.

I'm sure the picture you've attached is of the computer BIOS. But you're talking about installing in a "vhxd partition". If you're installing in a VM the actual hardware BIOS settings don't matter. You should have an option to create a Gen 1 or a Gen 2 VM in your hypervisor - that may have an effect.

If you're not installing to a VM, then try the "UEFI Native" option but I don't know what you mean about installing to a vhdx partition.

Your USB stick doesn't look right for UEFI. You show UEFI_NTFS at  0 MB and  HP_Cloud_Recovery at 59004 MB.

For a UEFI bootable USB stick you need the first partition to be the UEFI one with a capacity of between 200 MB to 1 GB say of FAT32  and another partition NTFS with the large other files.

I just read this over again.
In line 1, you wouldn't normally create those partitions manually. Though if you created them at the right sizes I guess it will work.

What if you install to the physical partition just to make sure your installer and everything works.

I've never heard of this process of installing to a VHDX with no hypervisor and the boot sector is physical. Have you done this before?

If you don't want to use the Windows Media Creation Tool then there is a brilliant tool called Ventoy https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html You can create the USB in either Windows or Linux. You just load whatever iso's, etc, (supports SO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files) onto the USB and when you boot from it Ventoy will present a list of the iso's, etc, that you have loaded. It works with Windows and Linux and it will work with either Legacy or UEFI computers. So you can load Windows Pro 10, Windows Pro 11, Clonezilla, GParted, etc, etc, and you have one tool for many tasks. The instructions to get started is here https://www.ventoy.net/en/doc_start.html

Use Media Creation Tool https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/software-download/windows10 or pure Powershell https://www.hyper-v.io/create-bootable-usb-windows to create the bootable USB media. It's always tricky with Rufus choosing the right options (GPT + UEFI + FAT32).

Please don't confuse partitioning scheme with file system. GPT and MBR are two different partitioning schemes among various more existing. They don't hold file systems and hence cannot be formatted to neither NTFS nor FAT32.

UEFI mandates several partitions, some optional and some mandotory with further constraints. It doesn't make sense to format an EFI-partition to NTFS as UEFI requires it to be FAT32. Its size has to be within specified limits and the first partition. 0 MB as shown in your screenshot is definitely too small. And the next partition is large enough and formatted correctly to NTFS. Peter has already provided a link to an article with more details.

I couldn't read which version of HP Cloud Recovery USB key you're using and if that version is compatible with your system firmware and your version of Windows 10 installer. Your system firmware is up to date. But perhaps your recovery key is outdated.

I have a HP ProBook, a few years younger than your EliteBook. My notebook requires 1-2 system firmware updates per year in order to remain able to update to next version of Windows 10. But you already have the latest system firmware for your model. So I don't know if there is a limit unto which version of Windows 10 you may use for your notebook with eventual more recent versions not compatible with your model. (I'm not yet sure if my HP tablet has the same limitation. It's slightly younger than your model and probably no longer receiving system firmware updates.)

  • And why do you try a cloud recovery key when you want to install from local USB stick?

I didn't check for the system requirements for the HP Cloud Recovery USB key. But creating a USB stick formatted for local Windows 10 installation sounds more appropriate.

Give Peters proposal of using Ventoy a try.

Yes. I installed OS to vhdx before. However, in Windows 10 GUI installer at upgrade or custom install stage, I press shift +f10 bring cmd prompt and diskpart and do partitioning and apply install.wim through dism command.

But, instead of using dism command we need to install OS from Windows 10 gui installer to vhdx.

This I'm able to achieve in mbr partitioned USB key with Windows 10 iso

I need to achieve same with GPT partitioned disk

When I partition GPT USB key, it is not booting at all in my HP Elitebook 840 G2. Confirmed, my laptop is uefi with CSM enabled.

But the same is booting in another HP latest laptop.
