How To Remove Lg Refrigerator Bottom Freezer Drawer

It's a Kenmore Elite 795.71322411, which is apparently an LG in disguise. The left side slide rail on the freezer compartment (5218JA1010F) is stuck in the half way position, allowing the freezer compartment to open only about 1/3 of the way. The smaller rail remains stuck inside the larger secondary rail; the larger slide rail piece is firmly stuck to the back of the freezer drawer, preventing access to the screws to remove the rail. Why would the rail stick and is there a way to get the smaller inside extension rail to come out?

Take the lower basket out and remove the two screws from the guide rails (one from each side).

Lift the freezer door up to unhook it from the rail support and remove. Pull both rails to full extension.

Snapshot_2.jpg

First : Remove the gear from the left side first by releasing the tab behind the gear, place a screwdriver between the gear and the tab and pull up on the gear.
Second : Remove the center rail.
Third : Remove the gear from the right side by following the same steps for the left side.

Thank you for the instructions. The front retaining screw on the left hand rail is covered by the stuck rail piece - the smaller extension part of the rail will not come out. How do I get at the screw - drill a hole in the stuck rail piece to access the screw?

What's the smaller extension part stuck on?? I can't get a mental picture so maybe take some pics and post them here.

Don't know. The smaller rail piece will not extend, as it appears stuck internally on something. In the part pictures, I saw a plastic piece with a roller at the end of it; maybe that malfunctioned? In the pictures I posted, you can see the larger middle piece of the rail stuck against the front door. That covers the screw that secures the rail in the front. I have heated the rail, pounded on it and tried prying to force it to retract - nothing works. Now I'm thinking that I'll have to drill a hole in the rail piece to get at the screw.

thanks for the help.

Can this rail be cut out? I can't open the freezer drawer far enough to even pull the baskets out of the frame. In pictures of the rail, there is a roller and flat plastic piece at the end of the smallest extension piece of the rail. It may have jammed somehow, freezing the extension rail piece in place.

Here are generic pictures. The thin rail, that extends the drawer to its furthest point out, with not come out. The second picture shows the rail piece that encloses this small rail - it is jammed tight into the front cover of the door. I cannot remove the drawer basket (as the drawer only pulls out about 1/3 of the way), nor access the screws to remove the rail. Basically. the inner most thin rail is stuck in place.

Generic pics a half inch by half inch??? I'm going to need pictures not postage stamps. Don't you have a camera on your phone?

Sorry - I didn't know they'd come out so small. I'll try again, but cannot get the detail that was shown in those generic pictures. Those show the rails in detail.

Hopefully these pictures are full size. This is the left hand rail assembly for a bottom freezer on a Kenmore. The thin internal rail will not come out of the larger cover rail; in LG5. you can see the extended thin rail extending from the larger cover rail - in my freezer, the thin rail will not come out; thus the freezer compartment cannot be pulled but except for about 1/3 of the way. As a result, I cannot pull out the freezer baskets, nor access any of the screws to remove the rail assembly. I noticed that at the posterior end of the thin rail, there appears to be a plastic roller - it may be jammed, preventing its movement. But there is no way to get at it.
Any ideas on how to proceed?

there appears to be a plastic roller

Third : Remove the gear from the right side by following the same steps for the left side.

Can't you remove it?

  • #15

I cannot remove the freezer baskets, as the lower drawer only comes out about 1/3 of the way. Thus I cannot access anything in the rear due to the obstruction and limited access. I cannot get at these tabs.

OK, I think you're at a point where you'll need to call a professional to come fix it for you.

Yea. that is what I was thinking. It appears the rail may have to be cut in order to get to the point of removal. I do not want to damage the plastic frame, as then a new rail wouldn't even work. Thanks for looking at it.

Anytime! I wish I was more help.

It was as easy as this - I over-thought the whole situation! The smaller rail has a rubber covering on a 90* metal tang at the terminal end - the rubber covering had dislodged and jammed the rail. I took a pick and removed the rubber covering from the bottom of the rail.

That's easy to do. Service techs just starting out have a tendency to do that quite often. Lesson learned right? Glad it was a simple repair! Thanks for the update.
