How To Draw A Vortex Step By Step

What is a vortex?

Ever swirled a spoon in a liquid to create a tiny little tornado? Well, that was a vortex! In my opinion, knowing a little background about vortexes makes it even funner to draw this already fun subject.

So just to be SUPER clear with y'all… I am an art teacher. However, with some research I became engrossed with vortexes. A vortex is something flowing in a circular motion around a central point. A vortex can created with a swirling fluid (like a whirlpool), spinning air (like a tornado), and more. In space, there are gravitational vortexes called black holes. Apparently Einstein even predicted that there is a fourth-dimension Space-Time Vortex, which I will be truly honest with you… went over my head. I do challenge you to check this out though and see what you can learn.

Below are three different methods to drawing different types of vortexes. My examples are done in a circular format with pencil; however, these could totally be explored with other mediums, varied shading, and different shaped picture planes like a traditional rectangle.

Other ways to finalize your vortex?

There are lots of different art mediums that can be used to finalize your vortex. Consider using pencil, colored pencil, paint, marker, and so much more Here are some examples below created by my advanced middle school artists. I was so impressed with their work!
